The forthcoming book Born by the Thames celebrates Stephen Dodgson the composer and also Stephen Dodgson the man, including his passion for bread-making and gardening, particularly vegetables!
But another of his passions was army history and in particular General Wade (of Scottish road construction fame), who absolutely fascinated him.
Along with Stephen Dodgson’s opera Margaret Catchpole, one of the last things he mentioned to his wife Jane was the legacy of his research about Wade. And further to an article he had published about Wade Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research in 2004, all his methodical meticulous notes on the subject are now archived and available at the National Library of Scotland.
