STEPHEN DODGSON
String Trios
Karolos
Naxos 8.573856
We’re delighted that the string trios recording was featured as one of The Sunday Times’s ‘essential new releases’ in August:
The late composer (and former reviewer for these pages [The Sunday Times]) left a large, varied oeuvre, steadily being transferred to disc. There are four premiere recordings on this vivid production — a Sonatina in B minor for violin (Harriet Mackenzie), Caprice After Puck for viola (Sarah-Jane Bradley), Partita for cello (Graham Walker) and an early work of notable vigour, the String Trio No 1 (1951). The String Trio No 2 (1964) exhibits Dodgson’s sinewy craftsmanship, even if it can’t match the earlier gusto.
