The critically acclaimed, award-winning Mithras Trio present a colourful pair of works: Stephen Dodgson’s second trio and Brahms’s first trio as part of the Lunchtime Concert series at St George’s Bristol.

Mithras-piano-trio

Praised for their ‘exquisite phrasing’, ‘full-blooded commitment’ and ‘bold, passionate colours’, the Mithras Trio is fast growing a reputation as one of the next generation’s most exciting piano trios. They are current members of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme, broadcasting regularly on BBC Radio 3, and they won first prize at the prestigious 10th Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition.

This concert’s first piece is the one-movement second trio by Stephen Dodgson, rich and complex, by turns playful, exuberant and rhapsodic. The second piece is one of the great masterpieces of the piano trio repertoire, lyrical and soaring in the first movement, impish and skittish in the scherzo, celestially calm in the adagio, and finishing with a dark and brooding fourth movement.

Programme

Dodgson – Trio no. 2 ‘Canonic Episodes’
Brahms – Trio no. 1 in B major Op.8 (revised)

Mithras piano trio

Ionel Manciu – violin

Dominic Degavino – piano

'Dormi Jesu' – LFCCM opening night @ St Paul's Knightsbridge
The London Festival of Contemporary Church Music opens on Friday 8th May with ‘Arise, My Darling’, a concert from stellar London chamber choir Pegasus. The evening explores a range of sacred works by modern composers and includes Stephen Dodgson’s ‘Dormi Jesu’. This beautiful simple soprano-alto-tenor miniature mixes medieval harmonies with hint of modernism to produce an exquisite vision of the Virgin Mary nurturing the young Christ child.
